6Bookplates: The Earliest Apps- A Discussion with Dr. Ezra Shales Bookplates: The Earliest Apps- A Discussion with Dr. Ezra Shales Thursday, October 19, 1:30 p.m. $10; $8 Friend of Morven Morven Museum & Garden is honored to feature this special presentation by Dr. Ezra Shales, Professor, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and author of Made in Newark: Cultivating Industrial Arts and Civic Identity in the Progressive Era, a book influential in the creation of our current exhibition Newark and the Culture of Art: 1900-1960. In Bookplates: The Earliest Apps, Dr. Shales invites us to contemplate the ephemerality of Apps (the pocket-sized, non-edible, smart-device variety), through which we perceive all sorts of short-lived ideological messages intertwining capitalism with aesthetic decisions. In looking back 100 years, the bookplate might have been the artifact to bear the closest resemblance to the size of today's digital screens. Discover how the "slip of paper" bookplate was also a dynamic tool for public marketing and self-invention and usually just as susceptible to obsolescence. Looking at bookplates made by the Newark Public Library and Museum Association, institutions intertwined from 1909-1925, join us as we revisit these miniature, magical posters - predecessors of today's ubiquitous Apps. Made in Newark will be available for sale and signing following Dr. Shales’ presentation. evdb2017-07-26 09:07:062017-10-19 13:30:00

10David Bromberg at Stangl Stage Don't miss this opportunity to experience The David Bromberg Quintet at Stangl Stage. Bromberg is “an American music icon” (Dr. John), and counts Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Emmylou Harris, Jerry Garcia, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, The Eagles, and so many more as collaborators, fans and friends. On October 14, David Bromberg – a godfather of Americana, decorated multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, gifted song interpreter and lauded bandmate to the stars - will release his 18th album, 'The Blues, The Whole Blues and Nothing But The Blues' (Red House Records). Produced by Levon Helm and Bob Dylan’s longtime collaborator, Larry Campbell, Bromberg’s first album since 2013 is a wonderfully curated selection of deep cuts from the blues genre, in addition to original compositions. Bromberg found his inspiration for the album when he heard Willie Nelson repeat a quote from Texas fiddler Johnny Gimble: "there's only two kinds of music - the Star Spangled Banner and the Blues. 3Jews and Muslims: The Early Years Investigate the early encounters between Jews and Muslims as we explore the origins of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula beginning in the 7th century. In the fall semester, we will read sections of the Quran as a primary key to understanding the values and beliefs of Islam. We will compare the Quran’s references to biblical characters such as Abraham, Ishmael, Moses and Ezra. Dr. Regina Stein is the Morris Kaplan Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum at Eldridge Street. She has taught for Temple Emanu-El’s Skirball Center for Adult Jewish Learning, the Wexner Heritage Foundation, CLAL, the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel, the Academy for Jewish Religion, and the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem.
