8The Cleveland Orchestra A chorus sings of the pleasures of wine, a winter storm blows, the sun rises gloriously, and a farmer and his beloved declare their love. Haydn’s oratorio The Seasons is a masterpiece of text wed to music with expressive arias for soloists and robust choruses. 1Jews and Muslims: The Early Years Investigate the early encounters between Jews and Muslims as we explore the origins of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula beginning in the 7th century. In the fall semester, we will read sections of the Quran as a primary key to understanding the values and beliefs of Islam. We will compare the Quran’s references to biblical characters such as Abraham, Ishmael, Moses and Ezra. Dr. Regina Stein is the Morris Kaplan Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum at Eldridge Street. 3ELIADES OCHOA In Cuba's mountainous eastern region, far from Havana's pre-revolution nightlife, Eliades Ochoa's musical roots were formed in the Cuban countryside and from the music of his family's humble farm community. Playing guitar since age 6, Eliades was raised listening to the stories of those times, playing at farmers dances, and developing his expressive, unaffected musical style.

Salsa and mambo dance rhythms are vintage Cuba, but Eliades' indigenous son style is where syncopated clave rhythms and short vocal refrains suggest the true story of Cuba's troubadour legacy and the divergence of African and Hispanic cultures. In Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, Eliades' memorable voice in the son composition Chan Chan symbolized Cuba's international musical revival and the song was the first track on the group's eponymous album of 1997.

In 2018, Eliades will tour in the U.S. with Grupo Patria, a band founded in 1939 and now led by Eliades and infused with his sense of musical adventure.

4CHUCHO VALDES FEATURING SPECIAL GUESTS

Winner of six Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards, the Cuban pianist, composer, arranger and bandleader Chucho Vald*s has been a key figure in the evolution of Afro-Cuban jazz for the past 50 years. His musical education includes formal studies and countless nights on the best stages in Cuba as the pianist with his father, Bebo Vald*s, and his orchestra Sabor de Cuba, and also the seminal Orquesta Cubana de M*sica Moderna. In the early 70s, Chucho distilled this experiences into the foundation of Irakere, an ensemble that marked a before and after in Afro-Cuban jazz. Chucho was the director, pianist, main composer and arranger of Irakere for more than 30 years. But since 2005, he has focused on his personal career, highlighting his work as a pianist and leading small ensembles. His 2014 recording, Border-Free, finds Chucho at the top of his game, leading his Afro-Cuban Messengers, a spectacular quintet comprising yet another generation of young brilliant Cuban musicians, in a search that transcends styles and traditions. In conjunction with the U.S. tour in 2015, Chucho Vald*s: Irakere 40 released Live at Marciac (Jazz Village/Harmonia Mundi) recorded at the Jazz in Marciac festival in France.

In 2017-2018 Chucho and his quartet will dazzle audiences worldwide with both their traditional and symphonic programs.

Meditation is often taught as just one thing: sitting on a zafu while focusing on your breath and clearing your mind. This is just one technique. In this weekly offering, we get creative, for while meditation can benefit everyone, there are many paths to presence and mindful living. In working with multiple techniques, you’ll gain a greater understanding of what works best for you and how to most easily incorporate mindful awareness into your everyday life. Each class begins with 30 minutes of individual meditation, followed by 30 minutes of social meditation and 30 minutes of community socializing. Meditation techniques vary week to week. Examples of individual meditation techniques include sitting, walking, breathing, guided, sound and mantra meditation. Examples of social meditation techniques include co-listening, group sharing, supportive presence, and intuitive body awareness exercises. We mix things up. You find your way. ABOUT VIRGINIA MASON RICHARDSON Virginia emphasizes discovery through experience rather than teaching through telling. Her background in human evolution, philosophy and dance led her to explore increasingly mysterious ideas, and she founded Fleeting Connections to help guide others as they embrace their own curiosity. Her practice uses yoga, Reiki, tarot, astrology and storytelling as tools to shift perspectives of reality and guide people toward a greater understanding of their own truth.Virginiaf143f2017-02-25 12:47:282017-11-26 17:00:00

4Cognac: King of Brandy You all look at this bottle of Louis XIII on the back bar as being Cognac’s best and most expensive example around, but how many of you have had it? What about Hennessy VS? This is the most consumed Cognac in the US, and yet, you may have never had it either. This is probably because the whole category is misunderstood! While these two extremes are solid finds in their own rights, there is a plethora of styles, ages and prices in between. We’ll be tasting all kinds of Cognacs from different areas, with a variety of methods of production: a very floral Fins Bois, an exuberant Borderies, a rich and rancio-filled old Grande Champagne and more, all paired with delicious food. Quite a bit of History and great visuals will compliment a class you won’t forget! Regular - $120.00evdb2017-07-30 06:51:582018-02-03 14:30:00

5Scotch You may think you know your stuff because of these drams you enjoy on a regular basis...but do you know why you like them so much? Do you know why you like certain single malts over others, or why you're having more than two blended Scotch whiskies within the half-hour following the official end of your workday? What about the water, allegedly source of all beauties, and the grains the beer-to-distill is made from? Learn how the oak shapes this rough new make into a delicate beverage, how the previous uses of the barrel affects its final taste, how the peat is used to impart a smoky trait to your favorite tipple, and why the Scots have been ruling the whisk(e)y world for so long. The terms "malting", "kiln", "single grain", "double-matured", "butt", "wort", "single barrel", "chill-filtration" mean anything to you? If not, this class will bring light to this sometimes obscure world of fine whisky. The history of it, the making of it, the tricks of the trade...you'll explore all this too, and much more. 6Bourbon Progression Act 2 The “rare & precious” style of Bourbon classes, but with a twist: an age statement progression from 11 year old Four Roses single barrel OBSF to Elijah Craig 18 years (the Brandy Library barrel!), with a few beauties in between…Van Winkle (12 years), a mysterious 13 year old we’re not sure about yet, Knob Creek limited edition 2001 (14 years), Forged Oak Orphan barrel (15 years), Black Maple Hill (16 years), Wild Turkey Masterskeep (17 years). We’ll get into the crunchy details of fine Bourbon production, and look back at the last 18 years of what this Bourbon industry offered us; we’ll talk sipping, collecting and storing. Fancy amuse-bouches will be served with these 8 whiskeys, naturally. Regular - $180.00evdb2017-07-30 06:54:092018-02-24 14:30:00

7Rare and Precious Japanese Whisky Japanese Whisky at its best! Why have Japanese whiskies conquered the World? If you look at the World Whisky Awards gathered by the Japanese producers for the last 10 years, you're wondering what the Scots are doing wrong...rather, you should ask yourself "what are they doing better"? Or just differently. Whisky making in the land of the Rising Sun may be only 90 year-old, but the craft involved in all steps of production seems unequalled so far...Now that we can finally get Japanese Whisky in the US, let's not miss this opportunity: we have waited too long! Yamazaki, Hakushu, Yoichi, Miyagikyo, Chichibu, White Oak, but also, Hibiki, Taketsuru, Nikka Coffey grain whiskies are now lining the shelves of NY retailers. In this class, you will learn a few secrets behind these international accolades. Regular - $180.00evdb2017-07-30 07:09:182018-03-13 18:00:00

9Cinco de Mayo: Tequila and Mezcal These two have clearly come out of the dark woods in the past few years...and there are so many sipping agave-based spirits available that that it has become difficult to choose them apart: many are just brands, and the packaging makes for most of the price tag. Others are celebrity-endorsed and acquire de facto a taste of luxury. We'll go straight to the source and tell you everything you need to know about the plant itself, how it is cooked, fermented and distilled, sometimes aged. Take a good look at the original Mexican spirit in its evolution from being the farmer's best friend to the Manhattan fancy joints go-to exclusive drink. We'll take the worms out of the equation, add on a few tacos, and compliment the feast with great visuals. Regular - $90.00evdb2017-07-30 07:26:512018-05-05 14:30:00
