9Alex Cameron
Bearing witness to the baroque clusterf*ckery of the world is no longer voluntary. We are all forced to watch. Every possible catastrophe vibrates in our pockets, demanding to be witnessed. In his second album, Forced Witness, out September 8th on Secretly Canadian, Alex Cameron's solution to the difficulties we face is a danceable and dangerous earnestness, a sense of honesty that heals and relieves even as it cleaves us or makes us laugh in self-defense. He's offering us vivid portraits of misfits who look at the world without illusion.Recorded in Berlin, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas and produced by Cameron along withFoxygen's Jonathan Rado, these tracks at first seem shamelessly entertaining, the driving rhythms and rousing melodies embellished at every turn by Roy Molloy's warm hornwork. But the love songs and anthems of personal resilience contain as much raw humanity as they do a savvy grasp of the impossible loneliness of the times, especially apparent in the song, "Stranger's Kiss" -- Cameron's affecting duet with Angel Olsen (who also sings backup on lead single, "Candy May"). The defiantly bloody knuckles in "Runnin' Outta Luck," co-written by and featuring Brandon Flowers, and the grime of wet dreams in "Country Figs"occupy the same space as the great sadness of the internet in the catchy and contemplative song "True Lies," in which Cameron sings about that buzzing hive of randomized sexuality where we can either submit to the stirrings in our own laps or let our fragile hopes catfish us. Penultimate track "Marlon Brando," is, as Cameron describes it, "a study of a man in the hopeless pursuit of a woman. He is a familiar character in the world, a self-assured jock, a dullard, a low grade human who uses a specific kind of language when he finds a situation outside of his control. The song's lyrics present a damning indictment of homophobia and misogyny and their genesis in toxic masculinity."If there is darkness in these songs, it is not because taboos can titillate but because Cameron knows that confession has a redeeming power and that people are often at their most startlingly beautiful when their skies have fallen. These songs are alive with the rich detail of life lived and the radical distinctiveness of the stories they tell feel universal. In these chaotic times when we aren't able to look away, Cameron is offering us a pure account of the world as he's seen it.

8Dick Fox’s Golden Boys

The original teen idols from the 1950s and 1960s sing their biggest hits as well as tributes to contemporaries such as Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin and Rick Nelson.

  • FABIAN, along with Frankie Avalon and Bobby Rydell were united by Producer Dick Fox.

These "Golden Boys" were three of the most popular Teen Idols of the late 50s and 60s. They have proved to be an overwhelming live concert success. Countless television appearances, a special performance for the President of the United States and a Golden Boys PBS special have brought on a vast audience of fans, not only from the fun generation, but all generations.

The Golden Boys spotlights each of the performers and their All Time greatest hits, "Turn Me Loose", "Tiger", "I'm A Man" (Fabian); "Venus", "De De Dinah", "Bobby Sox to Stockings" (Avalon); "Volare", "Wild One", "Kissin' Time" (Rydell). The three stars combine their talents on several songs and perform a tribute to the material of Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin, Rick Nelson and Bill Hailey.

Baby Boomers do a lot of reminiscing about everything from "Venus" to "Bobby Sox to Stockings" when Frankie Avalon takes the stage. He made the transition from "Teen-age Idol" to mature professional, has a career that now spans three generations of music, television and motion pictures., As a youth, he started out as a musician trumpet player. He seized every opportunity to enter local amateur contests and won a string of them. His first single "De De Dinah" became a smash hit, and his recording of "Venus" was one of the biggest selling hits of the era.

Fabian Forte was discovered at the young age of 14 sitting on his front steps in Philadelphia. Little did he realize dozens of hit singles, eight albums and earned gold records for "Turn Me Loose" and "Tiger", and a gold album for "The Fabulous Fabian".

In addition to his busy schedule touring with the Golden Boys, Fabian makes frequent appearances in television and feature film productions and for the past three years he has hosted "Fabian's Celebrity Golf Tournament" which has successfully raised money for veteran's causes.

Bobby Rydell made his debut in the late 50s as a rock and roll teen idol starring in movie roles such as "Bye Bye Birdie", and plays such as "West Side Story". He was a semi-regular on the Red Skelton Show and American Bandstand. His recording career earned him 34 Top 40 records which puts him in the top 5 of all single artists from his era. Bobby's hits include the million selling singles, "Volare", "Wild One", "We Got Love" and "Forget Him".

9Aimee Mann with Jonathan Coulton
Aimee Manns Mental Illness, her first album in five years, was released last year via her own SuperEgo Records. The record follows 2012s Charmer, which Rolling Stone proclaimed shows off the more pop-oriented side to her usual acoustic tendencies. With this follow-up, she returns to a more musically soft-spoken but still lyrically barbed approach.Mental Illness shows off Manns rich, incisive and wry melancholia in an almost all-acoustic format, with a finger-picky style inspired by some of her favorite 60s and 70s folk-rock records, augmented by haunting strings arranged by her longtime producer, Paul Bryan. Additional players include: Jonathan Coulton on acoustic guitar and backing vocals, Jay Bellerose on drums, Jamie Edwards on piano, John Roderick as a co-writer and Ted Leo (who recently joined her in a joint side project, The Both) as a background singer. On this eleven-track album, the Oscar-nominated, Grammy-winning singer remains a student of human behavior, drawing not just on her own experiences to form the characters in the songs but tales told by friends. I assume the brief on me is that people think that I write these really depressing songs, Mann says. I dont knowpeople may have a different viewpointbut thats my own interpretation of the clich about me. So if they thought that my songs were very down-tempo, very depressing, very sad, and very acoustic, I thought Id just give myself permission to write the saddest, slowest, most acoustic, if-theyre-all-waltzes-so-be-it record I couldI mean, calling it Mental Illness makes me laugh, because it is true, but its so blunt that its funny. After several albums with Til Tuesday, Mann began her solo career in 1993 with the album Whatever and made a name for herself through her independent success and the founding of her record label, SuperEgo Records. In addition to her solo albums, she has appeared on many film soundtracks, most notably the song score for Paul Thomas Andersons Magnolia, with Save Me landing her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song.In 2014, Mann joined up with Ted Leo for a more rock-oriented duo project, releasing a self-titled album under the name The Both. Other extracurricular activities since Charmer ranged from playing herself on the hit TV series Portlandia to performing for President Obama and the First Lady at the White House. Named one of The Huffington Posts 13 Funny Musicians You Should Be Following On Twitter, Mann has gained a diehard social media following for her quick wit and stinging observation.
